Optimize your lubrication and maintenance strategy:

Care and Usage

First Use

Preparing your new Zep dry graphite lubricant:

  1. Surface preparation
Clean, degrease, and thoroughly dry the surfaces to be treated. Any oil or dirt residue will compromise the adhesion of the graphite film. Use an industrial degreaser for optimal results.
  2. Vigorous agitation
Shake the aerosol can for at least 30 seconds before each use. This critical step ensures homogeneous dispersion of the graphite in the carrier solvent.
  3. Application test
Test on a small, inconspicuous area to check compatibility with your surface. Let it dry for 2-3 minutes and assess the result.
  4. Initial application
Spray from a distance of 15-20 cm using a regular sweeping motion. Apply a thin, even coat rather than a thick one. Allow to dry for 5 minutes before use.

Regular Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your lubricated equipment:

Weekly visual inspection:

  • Check the integrity of the graphite film in areas of critical friction
  • Identify areas of excessive wear that require re-application
  • Watch for abnormal debris buildup, which indicates a mechanical problem.

Re-application according to frequency of use:

  • For intensive daily use: reapply every 2-4 weeks
  • Moderate use: reapply every 1-2 months
  • Occasional use: reapply every 3-6 months or as needed

Preventive rotation:

  • Operate the lubricated mechanisms regularly to maintain film distribution
  • Monthly key insertion is recommended for locks and parking meters.
  • On gears, manual rotation between extended uses

Precautions for Use

For your safety and the safety of your equipment:

  • Flammable aerosol

Do not spray near flames, sparks, or hot surfaces above 50°C. Risk of fire and explosion. Ensure adequate ventilation during application.

  • Container pressure

Do not puncture or incinerate, even after use. May burst if heated. Store away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

  • Electrical conductivity

Graphite is conductive; avoid application to live electrical components. Risk of short circuit. Disconnect or isolate before handling.

  • Prolonged skin contact

Wear protective gloves during intensive use. Graphite can dry out the skin. Wash hands with soap and water after handling.

  • Inhalation

Use in a well-ventilated area or with appropriate respiratory protection. Solvent vapors may cause dizziness. If you feel unwell, move immediately to fresh air.

Storage Tips

Short-term storage (regular use):

  • Temperature: Store between 5°C and 30°C in a dry place
  • Position: Store upright to prevent valve leaks
  • Protection: Keep spray cap in place between uses
  • Location: Well-ventilated area away from heat sources
  • Check: Shake before each use, even after a short period.

Long-term storage (more than 3 months):

  • Stable ambient temperature: Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations
  • Controlled humidity: Dry location to prevent valve oxidation
  • Inventory rotation: FIFO method (first in, first out)
  • Functionality test: Check spraying every 6 months
  • Shelf life: 3-5 years if stored correctly before opening

Winter storage in Quebec:

Never leave the aerosol can in a vehicle or unheated room during winter. Temperatures below -10°C can affect pressure and viscosity.

Store in an environment maintained above 5°C. If exposed to cold, gradually warm to room temperature before use and shake vigorously.

Our answers to your questions about Zep Dry Graphite Lubricant

What maximum temperature can this graphite lubricant withstand?

The Zep dry graphite lubricant withstands continuous temperatures up to 850°F (454°C) and can handle peaks up to 1000°F (538°C) without breaking down.

This exceptional thermal performance makes it ideal for:

  • Industrial oven and furnace mechanisms
  • Heat-treating equipment
  • High-temperature engine components
  • Applications where conventional lubricants carbonize

At the opposite extreme, it performs perfectly down to -25°F (-32°C), making it suitable for Quebec’s harsh winter climate.

How is the Zep dry graphite lubricant correctly applied?

Proper application is done in four simple steps:

  1. Completely clean and degrease the surface with an industrial degreaser, then dry
  2. Shake the aerosol vigorously for at least 30 seconds
  3. Spray from 15–20 cm away in smooth passes for a thin, even coat
  4. Let dry for 5 minutes before putting into service

For best results, apply several thin coats rather than one thick one. Shake again between coats if treating multiple parts. The film appears dark gray/black once dry and should not feel sticky to the touch.

What is the difference between graphite lubricant and Teflon (PTFE)?

The graphite and Teflon are both excellent dry lubricants, but they have distinct characteristics:

Maximum temperature:

  • Graphite: Resists up to 1000°F (538°C)
  • Teflon (PTFE): Resists up to 500°F (260°C)

Electrical conductivity:

  • Graphite: Electrical conductor
  • Teflon (PTFE): Electrical insulator

Load supported:

  • Graphite: Very high
  • Teflon (PTFE): Medium to high

Chemical resistance:

  • Graphite: Excellent
  • Teflon (PTFE): Excellent

Film color:

  • Graphite: Gray/Black
  • Teflon (PTFE): Transparent/White

Typical applications:

  • Graphite: High temperature, heavy loads
  • Teflon (PTFE): Precision, extreme cleanliness

Graphite excels for high-temperature and heavy-load applications.
Choose Teflon instead for precision mechanisms requiring absolute cleanliness, where the black mark of graphite would be problematic, or for electrical equipment where the conductivity of graphite would pose a risk.

  • After opening: Use within 12–18 months for optimal performance

Refer to the complete Maintenance and Use section above for detailed instructions.

Does this graphite lubricant withstand Quebec and Canadian climate?

Absolutely! The Zep dry graphite lubricant is perfectly suited for Canada’s harsh climatic conditions.

Extreme cold resistance:

Operates effectively down to -25°F (-32°C), more than enough for the harshest Quebec winters. The graphite film does not harden, crack, or lose its lubricating properties in cold weather, unlike conventional greases.

All-season protection:

  • Winter: Maintains smooth lubrication of outdoor mechanisms exposed to freezing
  • Summer: Withstands extreme heat without softening or dripping
  • Rain/snow: Resists water and humidity without dissolving or washing off

Typical Canadian applications:

Outdoor locks, gate hinges, garage mechanisms, exposed agricultural equipment, snow-removal machinery, and any equipment operating outside 12 months a year. Its moisture resistance prevents rust while lubricating, providing dual protection season after season.
