How to choose a chain hoist based on load and lifting height

Which capacity should you choose: 1/2, 1, 2 or 3 tons?

The hoist capacity must always exceed the heaviest load you plan to lift. One ton is about 2,205 lb, so a 1/2-ton hoist lifts about 1,100 lb and a 3-ton hoist about 6,600 lb.

The 10-foot JET 1 ton is $177.41, the 10-foot JET 2 ton is $269.01 and the 10-foot Vulcan Nova 3 ton is $288.60. Never exceed the maximum load marked on the hoist. Also keep a safety margin, especially for loads whose weight is approximate.

What lifting height should you plan for?

The lifting height matches the chain length. Ten feet is about 3 meters and twenty feet about 6 meters. Measure the distance between the anchor point and the floor, then add the height of the load and the sling.

The JET 2 ton sells for $269.01 with 10 feet of chain and $358.17 with 20 feet. Some 20-foot sizes are sometimes out of stock, so check stock on the product page.

How do you install and use a hoist safely?

Attach the hoist to a structure built to support the load, such as a steel beam, and never to a doubtful point. Inspect the chain and hooks before each use, and replace any deformed or worn part.

Always stay clear of the suspended load, lift slowly and wear a helmet and gloves. A manual hoist is for lifting loads, never people. Keep the chain clean and lightly oiled so it moves without jerking.

Which accessories and complementary solutions should you consider?

A replacement hook for the 2-ton Vulcan hoist is available at $156. To pull or tension a load horizontally, ratchet levers and winches are better suited than a hoist.

To lift a vehicle, see jacks and rams, and to secure a load, tie-down straps. The full selections are in our lifting collections. A helmet and suitable gloves complete the basic protective equipment. Check the stock of each size on the product page before ordering.

Should you choose a manual hoist or an electric system?

A manual chain hoist is simple, light and needs no power, which makes it practical for occasional lifts in the shop or garage. It takes effort on the hand chain, especially at full load.

For frequent lifts or repeated loads, an electric lifting system reduces fatigue and speeds up the work. Compare both options in our lifting and electric hoists collections before choosing, based on how often you lift and the maximum load.

We answer your questions about chain hoists

Which chain hoist capacity should you choose?

Choose a capacity higher than the heaviest load you will lift. Our models range from 1/2 ton, at $201.37, to 3 tons, at $288.60. One ton is about 2,205 lb. Also see our lifting collection.

What is the difference between a chain hoist and a ratchet lever?

A chain hoist is mainly for lifting a load vertically. A ratchet lever is more for pulling or tensioning a load. See our ratchet levers and our winches and come-alongs depending on the use.

Which chain length should you choose: 10 or 20 feet?

The chain length sets the lifting height. Ten feet gives about 3 meters and twenty feet about 6 meters. The JET 2 ton costs $269.01 in 10 feet and $358.17 in 20 feet.

Can you lift a person with a chain hoist?

No. A manual chain hoist is built to lift loads, not people. Always respect the maximum load, inspect the chain and hooks before each use and stay clear of the suspended load.

Do you ship chain hoists across Canada?

Yes. Shipping is free on orders of $150 or more, which includes all our hoists. Some sizes are in limited quantity, so check stock on the product page or contact our team.
