Buyer's guide: which table saw to choose for your workshop or job site?

Jobsite saw or cabinet saw: choosing the right format

Table saws fall into two main categories: portable job site saws and stationary cabinet saws.

Job site saws, such as the DeWalt DWE7491RS (15 A, 10 in), weigh between 25 and 50 kg and are easily transported from one job site to another. They are suitable for contractors who work on multiple sites.

Cordless models, like the DeWalt FLEXVOLT 60V kit, eliminate cables on active job sites. The 60V battery provides enough power for a day of standard cutting.

Cabinet saws are stationary, heavier (150 kg+), and are reserved for cabinetmakers and carpenters who work in a permanent workshop.

Technical Specifications: What Really Matters

Before buying a table saw, compare these four criteria.

Blade diameter: 8-1/4 in. or 10 in. 10-in. blades cut thicker stock and are standard in construction. 8-1/4 in. blades are suitable for fine cuts and portable models.

Depth of cut: 3-1/2 in. at 90° for 10-in. models. Sufficient for cutting 4x4 lumber in a single pass.

Rip capacity: The DeWalt DWE7491RS offers 32.5 in., ideal for cutting 4x8 plywood sheets without a second pass.

Power: 15 A for corded models, or 60V brushless for cordless. Brushless motors reduce maintenance by 50% compared to brushed motors.

Accessories that make a difference

A high-performance table saw depends as much on its accessories as on its power.

Rolling stand: essential for effortlessly moving the table saw. Folding models with steel frames can be stored in 30 seconds. The DeWalt DW7440RS directly fits the DWE7491RS.

Quality blades: choose a tungsten carbide blade, 40 to 80 teeth (TPI) depending on the fineness of the cut. 40T blades are suitable for general-purpose cuts, 80T blades for hardwoods and finish plywood.

Precise rip fence: the rip fence must slide smoothly and lock squarely. An imprecise fence by 1 mm generates a 3 mm deviation on a 3-foot-long board.

Safety: Rules to Prevent Accidents

The table saw is the stationary tool with the highest number of workshop accidents. These basic precautions reduce the risk to almost zero. Always use the splitter (riving knife) provided with the table saw. It keeps the saw kerf open and prevents kickbacks.

Wear ANSI Z87+ safety glasses and ear protection for all cuts. A table saw operates between 3,450 and 4,800 RPM, producing a continuous noise level of 90 dB. Never cut pieces that are too short without a push stick. Push sticks keep the workpiece away from the blade during the last 30 centimeters of the cut. Inspect the blade before each use: a warped or dull blade causes 80% of kickbacks.
