First use
Step 1 - Battery Preparation
Before first use, fully charge your DEWALT 20V MAX battery by placing it on the charger until the LED indicator shows a full charge (usually 60 to 120 minutes depending on the capacity, from 2.0 to 6.0 Ah). This initial full charge optimizes the performance and lifespan of the lithium-ion cells. Ensure the battery contacts are clean and free of dust or debris before insertion.
Step 2 - Battery Installation
Firmly insert the 20V MAX battery into the compartment at the base of the blower handle, aligning the guide rails. Push in until you hear a distinct click, confirming the battery is securely locked. Check the connection by gently attempting to remove the battery; it should not move. Consult the LED indicators on the battery to confirm the charge level before beginning work.
Step 3 - Functionality Test
In an open outdoor area, gradually press the variable-speed trigger to start the blower at low speed. Gradually increase the power by pressing the trigger further to reach the maximum speed of 450 CFM. Test the lock-on function by engaging the lock-on button once the desired speed is reached; the blower should maintain this speed without you having to hold the trigger. Familiarize yourself with the tool's balance and handling before beginning actual cleaning.
Step 4 - Adjusting the technique
Hold the blower about 15 to 30 cm above the ground, pointing the nozzle in the desired direction. Use smooth, sweeping side-to-side motions rather than pointing it statically, allowing the airflow to gradually push debris in the desired direction. For wet leaves or heavy debris, bring the nozzle closer to within 10-15 cm of the surface and use maximum power. Adjust the speed according to the type of debris and the sensitivity of the work area.
Regular maintenance
Clean after each use
After each use, remove the battery and use a dry cloth or soft brush to remove any dust, leaves, and debris that has accumulated on the outer casing and around the motor's ventilation openings. Visually inspect the inside of the blower tube for any potential blockages caused by compacted leaves or jammed branches. Never hose down or immerse the blower; use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the external surfaces if necessary.
Monthly component inspection
Once a month during regular use, visually inspect the blower tube for cracks, deformation, or signs of excessive wear that could affect performance. Check that all screws and fasteners are tight, especially those securing the handle and blower tube to the main body. Examine the battery's electrical contacts and clean any corrosion or debris buildup with a dry cloth to ensure optimal electrical connection.
Proper storage during the off-season
During winter or periods of prolonged non-use exceeding 30 days, store the blower in a dry, temperature-controlled location between 5°C and 25°C, protected from excessive humidity and frost. Remove the battery and store it separately with a 40% to 60% charge to maintain the health of the lithium-ion cells during extended storage. Cover the blower with a protective bag or cloth to prevent dust accumulation. Avoid storing near heat sources, windows exposed to direct sunlight, or areas prone to freezing.
Brushless motor maintenance
The brushless motor requires no special maintenance or replacement of wear parts like the brushes in conventional motors. Simply ensure that the motor's ventilation grilles remain clear of debris to allow adequate airflow for cooling. If you notice an unusual decrease in power, overheating, or abnormal noises, stop use immediately and contact DEWALT or Polar Industrial Equipment customer service for professional diagnosis.
Precautions and safety
Personal protective equipment recommended
Always wear certified impact-resistant safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris, dust, and particles thrown up during blowing. Although this blower is quiet (62-66 dB), light hearing protection is recommended for extended sessions exceeding two continuous hours. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and work gloves for protection against potentially flying debris and a better grip on the tool.
Safe use around people
Never direct the airflow towards people, pets, or fragile glass surfaces that could shatter under pressure. Maintain a minimum safety distance of 3 to 5 meters between the operating blower and anyone in the area. Warn nearby people before starting the blower. Be especially vigilant with children and animals who might approach unexpectedly during operation.
Weather and environmental conditions
Avoid using the leaf blower during heavy rain, thunderstorms, or high winds exceeding 40 km/h, as these conditions can make blowing ineffective and potentially dangerous. Do not use the tool in explosive environments or near flammable materials such as gasoline, solvents, or combustible dust. Observe the hours permitted by municipal regulations, generally between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends in residential areas.
Preventing damage to equipment
Never force the blower beyond its capacity by attempting to move heavy objects such as rocks, thick branches, or metal debris for which it is not designed. Avoid blocking or restricting the airflow, as this can cause the motor to overheat and trigger the thermal protection. Never modify the tool by removing safety components or attaching accessories not approved by DEWALT, as this may compromise safety and void the warranty.
