First Use

Activating your new Makita XGT batteries:

1. Charge fully before first use

Install each new battery on the Makita DC40RA charger and allow it to charge until it automatically shuts off (approximately 28 minutes). This initial full charge activates the lithium-ion cells and calibrates the capacity indicator for accurate readings.

2. Check the LED charging indicator

Press the check button located on the side of the battery. All 4 LEDs should light up to confirm a 100% charge. Familiarize yourself with the indicator system: 4 LEDs = 75-100%, 3 LEDs = 50-75%, 2 LEDs = 25-50%, 1 LED = less than 25%.

3. Install correctly on your tool

Align the battery guide rails with those of the XGT 40V tool. Slide firmly until you hear and see a click into place. Check that the battery is securely engaged by gently pulling it back.

4. Perform a complete break-in cycle

For the first 5 cycles, use the battery until it reaches approximately 20% capacity (1 flashing LED) and then fully recharge. This break-in period optimizes the performance and lifespan of the lithium-ion cells.

Regular Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your Makita XGT batteries:

After each use:

• Remove the battery from the tool if it will not be used for more than 30 minutes to prevent accidental discharge.
• Clean the electrical contacts with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris
• Visually inspect the case for cracks, deformation, or signs of impact.

Load management:

• Recharge as soon as the LED indicator displays only 1 light (less than 25%).
• Avoid leaving the battery completely discharged for more than 48 hours.
• Remove the battery from the charger within one hour of charging completion to prolong its lifespan.

Recommended rotation:

• Alternate the use of your two batteries to even out the charging cycles.
• Identify your batteries (numbered label) to track their usage history

Cleaning and Maintenance

Deep monthly cleaning:

1. Electrical contacts- Use a cotton swab lightly moistened with 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the 5 connection contacts. Allow to dry completely before use.
2. External enclosure- Wipe with a damp, non-abrasive cloth. Never use solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic.
3. Ventilation grilles- Gently blow with low-pressure compressed air to dislodge accumulated dust. Maintain a minimum distance of 15 cm.
4. LED indicator check- Test the proper functioning of the check button and each LED. Any malfunction requires professional inspection.

Products to avoid: petroleum-based cleaners, solvents, pressurized water, steam cleaners.

Suggested frequency: monthly deep cleaning for intensive daily use, quarterly for occasional use.

Precautions for Use

For your safety:

• Never short-circuit the contacts- Avoid any contact between the terminals and metallic objects (nails, screws, coins) which could cause sparks, overheating or fire.
• Avoid extreme temperatures- Do not use outside the range of -20°C to +50°C. In very cold Quebec weather, preheat the battery to room temperature for 15 minutes before use for optimal performance.
• Avoid violent impacts- Never drop the battery from a height greater than 1 meter. A severe impact can damage the internal cells even without any visible external signs.
• Dismantling strictly prohibited- Never open the battery case. Any internal intervention voids the warranty and presents risks of short circuit and fire.
• Water protection- Although splash-resistant, the battery is not waterproof. Never immerse it and protect it from heavy rain and excessive humidity.
• Signs of immediate cessation- Stop use immediately if you detect any unusual odor, excessive heat, deformation of the casing, liquid leakage, or smoke. Contact Makita service immediately.

Storage Tips

Short-term storage (less than 2 weeks):

• Keep the charge between 40% and 80% (2-3 LEDs lit) to optimize cell health
• Store at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C in a dry place
• Store in a case or drawer away from dust and direct sunlight.
• Check the charge level every week

Long-term storage (more than 2 weeks):

• Charge to approximately 50% capacity (2 LEDs lit) before prolonged storage
• Store in a cool, dry environment between 10°C and 20°C, never above 25°C.
• Recharge every 3 months, even if not in use, to prevent damaging deep discharge.
• Visually inspect monthly for any signs of swelling or deformation
• Expected lifespan with proper storage: minimum 1500 cycles or 5-7 years

Winter storage in Quebec:

• If storing in an unheated garage, maintain a temperature above -10°C with insulation.

• Never charge a cold battery (below 0°C), warm it up to room temperature first
• Performance may temporarily decrease in very cold weather but recovers upon warming up

What Is Covered

The Makita and Polar Industrial Equipment limited warranty covers:

Manufacturing defects- All construction, assembly or design defects present during initial manufacturing. This includes faulty welds, electronic circuit problems and connection failures.

Material defects- Defective or inferior materials used in manufacturing, including casing, lithium-ion cells, electrical contacts, and electronic components. Spontaneous cracking of the casing or abnormal cell degradation is covered.

Abnormal performance- Excessive capacity loss (more than 50% in less than one year of normal use), inability to maintain charge, or failure of the LED indicator without apparent external cause.

Repair labor- All diagnostic, labor and replacement parts costs for warranty-covered repairs are fully covered by Makita at no additional cost.

What Makita will do:

• Free repair of the defective product by an authorized Makita service center
• Replacement with a new or refurbished battery of equivalent performance if repair is impossible
• Refund of the purchase price prorated to wear and tear if replacement is not available

Warranty Exclusions

The warranty does NOT cover:

❌ Normal wear and tear- Gradual decrease in capacity over time and with repeated charge-discharge cycles. A battery losing 20-30% of its capacity after 500-1000 cycles is considered normal wear.

❌ Physical damage- Cracks, dents, deformations caused by drops, impacts, crushing or mishandling. Visible damage to the casing automatically voids the warranty.

❌ Exposure to extreme conditions- Damage due to immersion in water, prolonged exposure to out-of-specification temperatures (-20°C to +50°C), complete freezing of the battery or exposure to fire.

❌ Misuse- Use with non-Makita chargers, intentional or accidental short-circuiting of contacts, overloading in non-recommended applications, or modification of the housing or internal components.

❌ Neglect of maintenance- Prolonged storage at zero load, continuous exposure to dusty or corrosive environments without cleaning, or failure to follow recommended storage procedures.

❌ Unauthorized intervention- Disassembly, attempted repair by uncertified personnel, opening of the casing, or modification of the battery in any way.
