Care and Usage

First Use

Activating your new Makita XGT batteries:

1. Charge fully before first use

Install each new battery on the Makita DC40RA charger and allow it to charge until it automatically shuts off (approximately 28 minutes). This initial full charge activates the lithium-ion cells and calibrates the capacity indicator for accurate readings.

2. Check the LED charging indicator

Press the check button located on the side of the battery. All 4 LEDs should light up to confirm a 100% charge. Familiarize yourself with the indicator system: 4 LEDs = 75-100%, 3 LEDs = 50-75%, 2 LEDs = 25-50%, 1 LED = less than 25%.

3. Install correctly on your tool

Align the battery guide rails with those of the XGT 40V tool. Slide firmly until you hear and see a click into place. Check that the battery is securely engaged by gently pulling it back.

4. Perform a complete break-in cycle

For the first 5 cycles, use the battery until it reaches approximately 20% capacity (1 flashing LED) and then fully recharge. This break-in period optimizes the performance and lifespan of the lithium-ion cells.

Regular Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your Makita XGT batteries:

After each use:

  • Remove the battery from the tool if it will not be used for more than 30 minutes to prevent accidental discharge.
  • Clean the electrical contacts with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris
  • Visually inspect the case for cracks, deformation, or signs of impact.

Load management:

  • Recharge as soon as the LED indicator displays only 1 light (less than 25%).
  • Avoid leaving the battery completely discharged for more than 48 hours.
  • Remove the battery from the charger within one hour of charging completion to prolong its lifespan.

Recommended rotation:

  • Alternate the use of your two batteries to even out the charging cycles.
  • Identify your batteries (numbered label) to track their usage history
  • Replace both batteries simultaneously when they reach the end of their life to maintain consistent performance.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Deep monthly cleaning:

  1. Electrical contacts- Use a cotton swab lightly moistened with 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the 5 connection contacts. Allow to dry completely before use.
  2. External enclosure- Wipe with a damp, non-abrasive cloth. Never use solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic.
  3. Ventilation grilles- Gently blow with low-pressure compressed air to dislodge accumulated dust. Maintain a minimum distance of 15 cm.
  4. LED indicator check- Test the proper functioning of the check button and each LED. Any malfunction requires professional inspection.

Products to avoid: petroleum-based cleaners, solvents, pressurized water, steam cleaners.

Suggested frequency: monthly deep cleaning for intensive daily use, quarterly for occasional use.

Precautions for Use

For your safety:

  • Never short-circuit the contacts- Avoid any contact between the terminals and metallic objects (nails, screws, coins) which could cause sparks, overheating or fire.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures- Do not use outside the range of -20°C to +50°C. In very cold Quebec weather, preheat the battery to room temperature for 15 minutes before use for optimal performance.
  • Avoid violent impacts- Never drop the battery from a height greater than 1 meter. A severe impact can damage the internal cells even without any visible external signs.
  • Dismantling strictly prohibited- Never open the battery case. Any internal intervention voids the warranty and presents risks of short circuit and fire.
  • Water protection- Although splash-resistant, the battery is not waterproof. Never immerse it and protect it from heavy rain and excessive humidity.
  • Signs of immediate cessation- Stop use immediately if you detect any unusual odor, excessive heat, deformation of the casing, liquid leakage, or smoke. Contact Makita service immediately.

Storage Tips

Short-term storage (less than 2 weeks):

  • Keep the charge between 40% and 80% (2-3 LEDs lit) to optimize cell health
  • Store at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C in a dry place
  • Store in a case or drawer away from dust and direct sunlight.
  • Check the charge level every week

Long-term storage (more than 2 weeks):

  • Charge to approximately 50% capacity (2 LEDs lit) before prolonged storage
  • Store in a cool, dry environment between 10°C and 20°C, never above 25°C.
  • Recharge every 3 months, even if not in use, to prevent damaging deep discharge.
  • Visually inspect monthly for any signs of swelling or deformation
  • Expected lifespan with proper storage: minimum 1500 cycles or 5-7 years

Winter storage in Quebec:

  • If storing in an unheated garage, maintain a temperature above -10°C with insulation.
  • Before use after cold storage, allow the battery to acclimatize to room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
  • Never charge a cold battery (below 0°C), warm it up to room temperature first
  • Performance may temporarily decrease in very cold weather but recovers upon warming up

Our answers to your questions about Makita XGT 40V BL4025 Batteries

How long does a Makita XGT 2.5Ah battery last on a tool?

Runtime varies depending on the tool and application. On a drill/driver in standard fastening, you can expect approximately 250–300 three-inch screws driven into hardwood. With a circular saw, expect around 80–100 cross cuts in construction-grade 2x4 lumber.

Light applications such as drywall fastening can provide a full workday when rotating two batteries. Intensive tasks like continuous grinding can drain the battery in 15–20 minutes of sustained use.

What is the difference between the Makita XGT 2.5Ah and 4Ah batteries?

The main differences focus on three aspects:

Capacity and runtime:

The BL4040 (4Ah) offers 60% more runtime than the BL4025 (2.5Ah), delivering 144Wh versus 90Wh of total energy.

Weight and dimensions:

The 2.5Ah weighs 620 g, while the 4Ah weighs 940 g, a 320 g difference that can affect comfort during prolonged overhead or extended-arm use.

Charging time:

The BL4025 recharges in 28 minutes, compared to 45 minutes for the BL4040 with the DC40RA fast charger.

Price:

The 2.5Ah is approximately 25–30% less expensive, offering a better capacity-to-price ratio for tighter budgets.

Recommendation:

Choose the 2.5Ah for light to moderate work requiring lighter weight and frequent charging; opt for the 4Ah for intensive applications and maximum runtime.

Are Makita XGT 40V batteries compatible with 18V LXT tools?

No, XGT 40V batteries are not compatible with Makita 18V LXT tools. These are two distinct systems with different voltages, connection interfaces, and electronic communication protocols. XGT batteries work exclusively with tools from the XGT 40V MAX range identified by their turquoise XGT logo.

LXT 18V batteries have a completely different shape and locking system, making them physically incompatible with XGT tools. If you already own LXT tools, you must continue using LXT batteries for those tools. The XGT system represents Makita’s new premium platform, delivering superior power and performance for demanding professional applications.

What is included in this battery pack?

This pack contains exactly two Makita BL4025 XGT 40V 2.5Ah lithium-ion batteries, each in its original individual packaging. The batteries are new, never used, and ready for use after an initial charge upon receipt.

Important: The charger is NOT included in this pack and must be purchased separately. You will need the Makita DC40RA fast charger compatible with XGT 40V to recharge these batteries. What is your return policy on batteries?

Équipement Industriel Polar offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on all batteries. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, you may return the batteries in their original, undamaged packaging for a full refund or exchange. Batteries must be in resalable condition with no signs of wear, major scratches, or physical damage.

Return shipping costs are the customer’s responsibility unless the product is defective or an error occurred on our part. After the 30-day period, Makita’s 3-year limited manufacturer warranty applies, covering defects in materials and workmanship. To initiate a return, contact our customer service at 1-800-567-3206 to obtain a return authorization number (RMA).

How do I maintain my Makita XGT batteries to maximize their lifespan?

Follow these essential practices:

Optimal storage:

Store batteries at 40–60% charge (2 LEDs) if not used for more than one week. Avoid leaving them completely discharged or constantly at 100%.

Temperature:

Store in a cool, dry place between 10–25°C. Never leave batteries in a vehicle under direct sunlight or during extreme Quebec cold.

Regular cleaning:

Wipe electrical contacts monthly with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris that reduce connection efficiency.

Avoid full discharges:

Recharge as soon as the LED indicator shows only 1 light (less than 25%). Repeated deep discharges significantly reduce lifespan.

Rotation:

If you own multiple batteries, rotate their use to equalize charge cycles and maintain consistent performance.

For more details, refer to our Maintenance and Use section above.

Do these batteries perform well in Quebec winter cold?

Yes, Makita XGT batteries are designed to operate within a temperature range of -20°C to +50°C, covering most Quebec winter conditions. However, a few precautions optimize performance in extreme cold:

Preheating recommended:

At temperatures below -10°C, allow the battery to acclimate to room temperature for 15–30 minutes before intensive use to regain full capacity.

Temporary runtime reduction:

Expect a 15–25% reduction in runtime in very cold weather, which fully recovers once the battery warms up.

Winter storage:

If stored in an unheated garage, insulate the batteries or maintain temperatures above -10°C. Never charge a frozen battery—warm it up first.

Chemical protection:

Makita Premium lithium-ion cells use a special low-temperature-resistant electrolyte, outperforming standard batteries.

Thousands of Quebec professionals use Makita XGT batteries daily on outdoor winter job sites with excellent reliability.
