Care and Usage

First Use

Activating your new DeWalt shop vacuum:

1. Assembling the casters

Turn the vacuum cleaner upside down on a protected surface. Attach the four swivel casters to the pre-molded brackets under the dustbin using the self-tapping screws provided. Tighten firmly but not excessively to avoid cracking the plastic. Turn the unit right side up and check that all casters are in even contact with the floor and swivel freely.

2. Installing the cartridge filter

Open the side latches to remove the motor cover. Insert the DXVC6910 washable cartridge filter onto the center support, pushing it in until it clicks into place. Ensure the foam gasket is properly positioned all around to prevent air leaks. If using a disposable filter bag, install it now by sliding it onto the inner rim of the tank. Replace and lock the motor cover.

3. Connecting the accessories

Connect the 7-foot flexible hose to the main suction port on the side of the unit until you hear a safety click. Attach the rigid extension tubes to the end of the hose to the desired length. Choose the appropriate nozzle for your first task and firmly attach it to the end of the extension tube. All attachments should fit easily.

4. Pre-start check

Fully extend the 20-foot power cord from the rear rewind system and plug it into a standard 120V wall outlet. Ensure the tank is empty and clean. Flip the water-resistant on/off switch for a quick, few-second test. Listen to the two-stage motor; it should be remarkably quiet compared to a standard vacuum cleaner. You are now ready for your first professional cleaning jobs.

Regular Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your DeWalt 10-gallon shop vacuum:

After each use:

  • Empty the tank completely, even if it's only half full, to prevent mold and odors.
  • Wipe the outside of the tank and lid with a damp cloth to remove accumulated dust.
  • Check the drain hose for blockages by hanging it vertically and passing a broom handle through it.
  • Store all accessories in the storage bag attached to the back to prevent loss
  • Wrap the power cord around the integrated system without overtightening.

Cartridge filter management:

  • Visually inspect the filter after every 3-4 uses for debris buildup
  • Lightly tap the filter over a bin to dislodge surface dust
  • Wash the filter under warm running water every month or whenever you notice a loss of suction.
  • Allow to air dry completely for 24 hours before reinstalling (never use wet).
  • Replace the cartridge filter annually or if damaged despite regular cleaning.

Recommended monthly inspection:

  • Check the condition of the swivel casters and remove any hair or debris wrapped around the axles.
  • Examine the power cord along its entire length for cuts or wear.
  • Test the hose connections for leaks by unplugging and firmly replugging them.
  • Check that the engine cover latches always close securely without excessive play.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Thorough quarterly cleaning:

Polyethylene tank

Fill the reservoir with warm, soapy water and let it soak for 15 minutes. Scrub the inside with a soft brush to remove any stuck-on residue. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry completely upside down before next use. Avoid harsh solvents that can damage the plastic.

Washable cartridge filter

Soak in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 10 minutes. Gently massage the pleats to loosen embedded particles without tearing the filter media. Rinse under running water until the water runs clear. Shake off excess water and hang to dry completely before reuse.

Hose and accessories

Run a cloth dampened with soapy water through the inside of the flexible hose, pulling from one end to the other. Rinse the rigid fittings and nozzles under running water. Wipe all surfaces with a dry cloth to prevent rust on metal parts. Store in a dry place after cleaning.

External motor housing

Wipe the yellow and black cover with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Clean the air vents with a soft brush to maintain optimal airflow. Never immerse the motor housing in water. Avoid high-pressure cleaners, which can force water into electrical components.

Frequency :Perform this complete cleaning every 3 months in intensive use, or twice a year in moderate use.

Precautions for Use

For your safety and the longevity of the equipment:

  • Never vacuum flammable materials, toxic liquids, gasoline, solvents or corrosive chemicals.
  • Avoid vacuuming hot ashes, embers, or incandescent materials that can melt components.
  • Do not use without a filter installed, as debris will damage the engine and void the warranty.
  • Avoid prolonged vacuuming of ultrafine dust without a disposable filter bag as additional protection.
  • Never block the engine's ventilation grilles during operation, as this may cause overheating.
  • Always unplug the appliance before maintenance, changing accessories or cleaning the filter
  • Do not pull on the cord to move the vacuum cleaner; use the carrying handle provided for this purpose.
  • Protect the power cord from sharp edges, hot surfaces and vehicle traffic
  • Supervision is required when used near children or pets.
  • Replace any damaged cord immediately by a qualified technician before reuse.

Optimal conditions: Use in temperatures between 0°C and 40°C, in dry environments suitable for electrical components. Do not expose to direct rain or leave outdoors permanently.

Storage Tips

Short-term storage (daily or weekly use):

Empty and clean the tank after each use. Leave the lid slightly ajar to allow for complete evaporation of residual moisture and prevent mold. Wrap the cord around the integrated system and store the hose and accessories in the provided bag. Place the unit in your workshop, garage, or work vehicle for quick access.

Long-term storage (more than 30 days without use):

Perform a complete cleaning, including washing the dustbin and cartridge filter. Thoroughly dry all components before storing. Remove and store the filter separately in a clean plastic bag to protect it from dust. Wrap the nozzles in newspaper to prevent scratches and impacts. Store the vacuum cleaner in a dry place, away from excessive humidity, extreme temperatures, and direct sunlight.

Winter storage in Quebec:

If storing in an unheated garage or outdoor shed during Quebec winters, protect from sub-zero temperatures, which can weaken the plastic. Place on a raised pallet to avoid contact with icy ground. Cover with a breathable tarp, but do not seal tightly. Check the condition of the joints and hose in the spring, as freeze-thaw cycles can cause cracks. Perform a complete inspection before putting back into service.

Our answers to your questions about the DeWalt 10 Gallon Vacuum Cleaner

What is the real capacity of the DeWalt 10-gallon vacuum?

The tank capacity is 10 U.S. gallons, which is exactly 38 liters. This generous capacity allows you to clean large areas without constantly stopping to empty the tank.

To give you a concrete idea, this represents about 15 to 20 minutes of continuous suction of dense sawdust in a woodworking shop before needing to empty, or the complete cleanup of a typical residential job site including drywall debris and construction dust.

The robust polyethylene tank design with an integrated drain greatly facilitates liquid emptying without having to tip the entire unit.

Can this vacuum suck up water and liquids?

Yes, the DeWalt DXV10PL vacuum is specifically designed for both dry and wet pickup without requiring a filter change between uses. This is one of its major advantages.

You can vacuum:

  • Clear water and non-corrosive liquids
  • Accidental spills on job sites
  • Puddles after floor cleaning
  • Tool cooling liquids
  • Mud and wet debris

Important precautions:

  • Always empty the tank immediately after vacuuming liquids
  • Do not exceed the maximum capacity of 10 gallons
  • Allow the filter and tank to dry completely before long-term storage
  • Never vacuum gasoline, solvents, flammable oils, or corrosive chemicals

The large-diameter tank drain allows you to quickly evacuate collected liquids without effort.

What accessories are included with the vacuum?

Your DeWalt 10-gallon vacuum comes complete with everything needed to get started immediately.

Accessories included in the box:

  • 7-foot (2.1 m) flexible crush-resistant hose
  • 2 rigid extension wands to adjust length as needed
  • Multi-purpose utility nozzle for general cleaning
  • Crevice tool for corners, gaps, and tight spaces
  • Floor nozzle with integrated brush
  • Washable and reusable DXVC6910 cartridge filter
  • High-efficiency disposable filter bag DXVA19-4101
  • Accessory storage bag with mounting support
  • 4 rubber swivel casters with installation hardware

No additional purchase is required for immediate use. All attachments connect easily to the hose without tools.

How do you maintain and clean the DeWalt vacuum filter?

Regular maintenance of the cartridge filter is essential to maintain optimal suction and extend the life of your equipment.

Basic maintenance after every 3 to 4 uses:

  • Remove the filter by opening the motor head latches
  • Firmly tap it over a trash can to dislodge surface dust
  • Visually inspect to ensure there are no tears or damage
  • Reinstall the filter, making sure it clicks into place properly

Monthly deep cleaning:

  • Rinse the filter under lukewarm running water while holding it upside down
  • Add a few drops of mild dish detergent if heavily soiled
  • Gently massage the pleats without tearing the filter media
  • Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear
  • Shake off excess water and allow to air dry completely for 24 hours

Important: Never reinstall a wet filter, as this would damage the motor. Replace the cartridge filter annually even with regular maintenance, or immediately if you notice tears or loss of suction despite cleaning.

What is the total length of the power cord?

The power cord measures 20 feet (6.1 meters) in length, which is significantly longer than the typical 10 to 15 feet of standard shop vacuums.

This generous length offers several practical advantages:

  • Cleaning large rooms without constantly changing outlets
  • Fewer extension cords needed on job sites
  • Total working radius of about 27 feet when adding the 7-foot hose length
  • Integrated cord wrap at the rear for organized and quick storage

The cord is also designed to withstand harsh job-site environments with a durable jacket protecting against abrasion, extreme temperatures, and moisture. The large on/off switch is easily accessible even when wearing work gloves.

Is it a quiet vacuum compared to standard models?

Yes, the DeWalt DXV10PL vacuum is equipped with a revolutionary 2-stage motor that operates up to 50% quieter than conventional shop vacuum motors of equivalent power.

This technology offers several concrete benefits:

  • Significant reduction in hearing fatigue during prolonged use
  • Ability to work without hearing protection for short sessions
  • Less noise disturbance in commercial or residential environments
  • Easier communication with coworkers during operation

Estimated noise level: approximately 70–75 decibels compared to 85–90 decibels for standard 5 HP shop vacuums. Despite its quieter operation, the 2-stage motor does not sacrifice any suction power and even offers doubled service life thanks to its optimized design that reduces thermal and mechanical stress.

For work in sensitive areas such as occupied offices, schools, or residences, this vacuum represents a respectful choice while maintaining professional performance.

Can this vacuum be used to pick up fine wood sawdust?

Absolutely, this vacuum excels at picking up fine wood sawdust and is an excellent choice for woodworking and cabinetry shops.

The 5.5 HP motor with 2-stage technology generates powerful and consistent suction capable of:

  • Capturing very fine sanding dust
  • Vacuuming planing and routing chips
  • Cleaning dust from miter saws and circular saws
  • Picking up debris from cutting hardwood and plywood

Recommendations for optimal use with sawdust:

  • Always install the disposable filter bag in addition to the cartridge filter to capture ultra-fine particles
  • Clean or tap the filter regularly, as fine sawdust can reduce airflow
  • Empty the tank frequently, as compacted sawdust takes up more volume than anticipated
  • Use the floor brush attachment, which effectively captures sawdust on work surfaces

For professional woodworkers performing intensive daily sanding, consider investing in the optional DXVC6914 HEPA filter, which offers even superior filtration of respirable wood particles. The 10-gallon capacity allows complete cleaning of a medium-sized workshop without multiple emptying cycles.

Does this vacuum withstand the Quebec climate and work in winter?

The DeWalt DXV10PL vacuum is designed to withstand the rigors of the Canadian climate with certain usage precautions.

Winter use on outdoor job sites:

  • Operates perfectly at temperatures down to -10°C if pre-warmed
  • The motor generates heat during operation, helping maintain operating temperature
  • Robust construction resists impacts increased by plastic hardening in the cold

Recommended winter storage:

  • Avoid prolonged storage below -20°C, which can make the polyethylene tank brittle
  • If stored in an unheated garage, place it on a raised pallet away from the icy floor
  • Cover with a breathable tarp, but avoid airtight sealing
  • Completely drain any residual liquid before the first freeze to prevent expansion damage

Resistance to typical Quebec conditions:

  • Rubber casters remain flexible even in cold weather
  • Power cord remains flexible down to approximately -15°C
  • Paint-free construction eliminates risks of chipping from freeze-thaw cycles
  • Simple mechanical components without electronics sensitive to temperature variations

For contractors working outdoors year-round, warm the unit for 15 minutes in a heated vehicle or trailer before first use on very cold mornings. This practice preserves the motor and ensures optimal startup.
