How to Choose Your Makita 18V LXT Battery

Which Capacity Should You Choose: 3Ah, 4Ah, 5Ah, or 6Ah?

The 3Ah suits lighter tools used intermittently, like screwdrivers. The 4Ah and 5Ah cover most daily needs on a residential job site. The 6Ah targets power-hungry tools, like circular saws or grinders.

All capacities share the same LXT form factor and the same charger. You can mix a small and a large battery based on the tool in use, without investing in a second system.

What Is the Makita 18V LXT System?

LXT is Makita's 18V cordless platform, the widest on the market with over 380 compatible tools. One battery powers drills, saws, grinders, and blowers, without switching systems.

LXT batteries remain backward compatible from one generation to the next. An LXT tool bought today still works with an LXT battery bought years ago, as long as the form factor stays the same.

How to Tell Which Makita 18V Batteries Are Compatible (Model B vs D)

Makita 18V batteries come in model B and model D. The D model fits every LXT tool, while the B model is reserved for tools marked with a star or a yellow bottom on the battery compartment.

Always check that marking before buying if you're adding a battery to an existing tool fleet. When in doubt, the D model remains the most versatile choice.

How to Tell When a Makita 18V Battery Is at the End of Its Life

A runtime that drops noticeably even after a full charge is the first signal. A battery that struggles to hold a charge or heats up abnormally during use is also nearing the end of its life.

Visible swelling or repeated charging errors are more serious signals to watch for. In those cases, replacing the battery rather than repairing it remains the only safe option.

How Do Makita 18V Batteries Perform in Canadian Winters?

Cold temporarily slows lithium-ion chemistry, which reduces the perceived runtime on an outdoor job site. Letting the battery warm up closer to room temperature before recharging it avoids damaging the cells.

Between winter uses, store your batteries indoors rather than in an unheated vehicle. This simple habit preserves their capacity across multiple seasons of Canadian job sites.

Your Questions About Makita 18V Batteries, Answered

What is the best Makita 18V battery for professional use?

For intensive professional use, the 5Ah or 6Ah offer the best balance between runtime and weight. The 3Ah suits lighter tools used intermittently, like work lights or compact drivers. The right choice mainly depends on the tool and the expected duration of use.

What is the lifespan of a Makita 18V battery?

Makita 18V LXT batteries are rated for about 2000 full charge cycles. Avoiding repeated full discharges and extreme temperatures helps preserve that lifespan. Actual wear varies based on how intensively it is used on site.

What is the difference between Makita model B and model D batteries?

The D model fits every LXT 18V tool without exception. The newer B model is reserved for tools marked with a star or a yellow bottom on the battery compartment. Check that marking before buying if you are adding a battery to an existing tool fleet.

How do you know when a Makita 18V battery is dead?

A runtime that drops quickly even after a full charge is the first sign. Repeated charging errors, visible swelling, or overheating during use also point to a battery at the end of its life. In those cases, replacement is the only safe option.

Are Makita 18V LXT batteries compatible with all my LXT tools?

Yes, the LXT platform includes over 380 compatible tools, from drills to blowers. Check out our Makita LXT 18V tools selection to see the full range compatible with these batteries.

Can you use a Makita 18V battery on a 40V XGT tool?

No, the 18V LXT and 40V XGT platforms are not compatible with each other. They use a different battery format and do not fit tools from the other system. For 40V tools, check our full range of Makita batteries.

How do you maintain a Makita 18V battery through a Canadian winter?

Always let a cold battery return closer to room temperature before charging it. Avoid storing it in an unheated vehicle between uses. This simple habit preserves its capacity across multiple seasons of job sites.

Are Makita 18V batteries covered under warranty?

Yes, they are covered under Makita's limited manufacturer warranty, valid in Canada. Keep your Équipement Polar proof of purchase for any claim. If you are unsure about eligibility, our team can walk you through the process.
