Care and Usage

First Use

Activating your new Makita lithium-ion batteries:

1. Full initial charge- Place each battery on the Makita charger for a minimum of 60 minutes before first use, even if the LED indicator already shows a partial charge. This initial charge optimizes performance and properly activates the lithium-ion cells.

2. Break-in cycle- Perform 3 complete charge-discharge cycles during initial use. Use the battery until the tool slows down, then recharge immediately. This process calibrates the internal management system and maximizes future capacity.

3. Compatibility check- Test each battery on your Makita 18V LXT tools to confirm secure engagement and proper operation. The battery should insert firmly with an audible click.

4. Warranty Registration- Keep your purchase receipt and note the serial numbers of each battery. Register your batteries on the Makita Canada website to activate the 3-year warranty.

Regular Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your Makita batteries:

After each use:

  • Remove the battery from the tool if you are not going to use it for more than 30 minutes.
  • Wipe the contacts with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris
  • Visually inspect the casing for cracks or damage.
  • Recharge the battery as soon as the LED indicator shows 1 bar remaining.

Load management:

  • Avoid completely discharging the battery regularly
  • Recharge after each workday to keep your cells healthy
  • Never leave a discharged battery for more than 48 hours without recharging.

Recommended rotation:

  • Alternate the use between your 2 batteries to balance the cycles
  • Label each battery with a marker to track usage
  • Use both batteries equally for optimal battery life.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Deep monthly cleaning:

1. Electrical contacts- Clean the gold contacts with a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Dry completely before use. Avoid water-based products or harsh solvents.

2. External casing- Use a damp cloth with mild soap to clean the external surface. Pay attention to the ventilation grooves to remove accumulated sawdust and dust. Dry completely with a clean cloth.

3. LED indicator- Gently clean the surface of the LED indicator with a microfiber cloth to ensure clear visibility of charge levels.

4. Ventilation system inspection- Check that the ventilation slots are not blocked. Use low-pressure compressed air to dislodge debris and dust if necessary.

5. Structural verification- Inspect the integrity of the casing, locking clips, and base. Any cracks or deformation require battery replacement for your safety.

Our answers to your questions about Makita 18V 4Ah Batteries

How long does a Makita 18V 4Ah battery last in continuous use?

Runtime varies depending on the tool used and work intensity. In typical use on a DDF482 drill/driver, you will get about 3 to 4 hours of continuous work with standard wood fastening.

On a DHS680 circular saw, expect 45 to 60 cuts in 2x4 lumber. For a DGA504 angle grinder, the 4Ah battery provides about 25 to 35 minutes of intensive continuous grinding.

Less power-hungry tools such as hammer drills, impact drivers, or jigsaws can run 5 to 6 hours with normal intermittent jobsite use. Ambient temperature also affects runtime: in cold weather below 0°C, runtime can decrease by 15 to 20%.

What is the difference between a Makita 4Ah battery and a 5Ah or 6Ah?

The main difference lies in energy capacity and therefore the runtime offered. A 5Ah battery provides 25% more runtime compared to the 4Ah, while a 6Ah offers 50% more.

However, higher-capacity batteries are heavier and bulkier: the 4Ah weighs 400g, the 5Ah about 550g, and the 6Ah nearly 650g. For overhead work or prolonged tasks requiring maneuverability, the 4Ah represents the best weight-to-runtime compromise.

4Ah batteries are also more affordable, recharge faster, and are perfectly suited for 80% of common applications. Choose the 5Ah or 6Ah only if you use very power-hungry tools such as circular saws or grinders for long periods without the possibility of recharging.

Are these batteries compatible with all my Makita 18V tools?

Yes, these BL1840B batteries are fully compatible with all tools in the Makita LXT 18V range. This includes:

More than 300 different cordless tools including drills, drivers, saws, grinders, sanders

Gardening tools such as hedge trimmers, blowers, lawn mowers

Specialized equipment such as vacuums, work lights, jobsite radios

Older and newer models since the launch of the LXT platform in 2005

Note: these batteries are NOT compatible with Makita 12V CXT tools, 10.8V tools, or older 18V NiCad tools from before 2005. Check that your tool is labeled LXT 18V to confirm compatibility.

What is included in this set of 2 batteries?

This set contains only 2 Makita BL1840B 18V 4.0Ah lithium-ion batteries. Each battery is equipped with a built-in 4-level LED charge indicator.

The charger is NOT included in this set and must be purchased separately. We recommend the Makita DC18RC fast charger, which fully recharges a 4Ah battery in just 36 minutes, or the DC18RD dual charger to recharge your 2 batteries simultaneously.

No tools are included either. Consult our Accessories section to see compatible chargers and other recommended products.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Équipement Industriel Polar offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with your Makita batteries, return them in their original packaging for a full refund or exchange, no questions asked.

In addition, the batteries are covered by Makita’s limited 3-year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty covers repair or replacement if a defect appears under normal use.

Keep your purchase invoice as proof for any claim. For 30-day returns, contact us at 1-800-567-3206. For Makita warranty claims after 30 days, visit an authorized Makita service center. Consult our Full Warranty section for all details and exclusions.

How do I maintain these batteries to maximize their lifespan?

Maintaining Makita lithium-ion batteries is simple but important. After each use, remove the battery from the tool if you are not using it for more than 30 minutes to preserve the cells.

Regularly clean the electrical contacts with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Never leave a battery completely discharged for more than 48 hours; recharge it as soon as possible.

For long-term storage (more than 2 weeks), charge the battery to 50–60% (2 LED bars) and store it in a cool, dry place between 10°C and 20°C. Recharge every 3 months even if unused.

Avoid extreme temperatures below -20°C or above 50°C. In winter in Quebec, never leave your batteries in a vehicle or unheated garage. Consult our Maintenance and Use section for all details and best practices.

Can I use these batteries in winter in cold weather in Quebec?

Yes, these Makita batteries are designed to operate at temperatures between -20°C and 50°C. They can therefore be used during Quebec winters for most outdoor work.

However, note that performance decreases in very cold weather. Below 0°C, runtime can be reduced by 15 to 20% compared to room temperature. Below -10°C, the reduction can reach 25 to 30%.

To optimize winter performance: keep a spare battery warm in your coat or heated vehicle, rotate between batteries to maintain temperature, and always store batteries indoors overnight.

Never attempt to charge a frozen battery directly. If your battery has been exposed to temperatures below -20°C, allow it to warm gradually to room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes before placing it on the charger. Cold resistance makes these batteries an excellent choice for Quebec workers operating in winter conditions.

How long does it take to fully recharge these batteries?

Charging time depends on the charger used. With the Makita DC18RC fast charger (recommended, sold separately), a 4Ah battery fully recharges in about 36 minutes.

With the standard Makita charger, allow about 60 minutes for a full recharge. The dual charger recharges 2 batteries simultaneously in 36 minutes each, ideal for this set of 2 batteries.

Makita chargers integrate an active cooling system that optimizes temperature during charging to speed up the process while preserving cell longevity. The LED indicator on the charger informs you of the charging status in real time.

To maximize lifespan, avoid recharging immediately after intensive use. Allow the battery to cool for 10–15 minutes before placing it on the charger if it is very hot to the touch.
