A good cordless chainsaw is the difference between felling a fallen tree in 10 minutes and spending half a day getting out the gas saw, oil mix, funnel, and earplugs. For property owners, arborists, and landscaping contractors, cordless has completely changed the way they work.

Its 16-inch bar covers trees up to 14 inches in diameter, which includes the vast majority of common felling tasks. The FlexVolt 60V platform delivers significantly more power and consistency under load than a standard 20V saw, with battery life that allows for long, uninterrupted work sessions.

The benchmark for Makita LXT users. A complete kit on the most widespread 18V platform in specialized trades in Quebec.
For users already invested in the Makita LXT 18V platform, this kit is the natural choice: the batteries power over 275 tools in the LXT range, meaning your battery investment continues to work for you far beyond the chainsaw itself. The brushless motor ensures superior battery life and durability compared to brushed models.
Pros
- LXT 18V Platform — compatible with 275+ Makita tools
- Complete kit included — batteries and charger
- Brushless motor — superior durability and battery life
Points to consider
- For truly intensive use, the XGT 40V platform offers more power

View the Makita 18V Kit at Polar →5. Makita UC004GM101 14'' XGT Chainsaw Kit
Makita's top-of-the-line for intensive professional use. The XGT 40V platform provides significantly more power than the LXT 18V in a precise and maneuverable 14-inch bar format.
Makita's XGT 40V platform represents the pinnacle of the cordless range. On a chainsaw, the power difference between 18V and 40V is directly felt in cutting speed, consistency under load, and the ability to maintain performance in dense or wet wood. The 14-inch bar is a good compromise between power and maneuverability for arborists and contractors who do regular felling.
Pros
- XGT 40V platform — significantly more powerful than 18V
- Maneuverable 14'' bar — good compromise between power and control
- Complete kit with XGT battery included
- XGT brushless motor — maximum durability
Points to consider
- XGT platform distinct from LXT 18V — separate battery investment
- For very large trees, a 16'' bar or larger offers more leeway

Not ideal for: Existing LXT 18V users who do not want to invest in a new platform.
Price: $629

For large trees and long sessions. The 18-inch bar with the 9AH battery covers significant cuts without compromising on battery life.
The 18-inch bar is the format for large trees: mature maples, elms, oaks. The 9AH battery included with this kit offers generous runtime for extended cutting sessions. The FlexVolt 60V platform maintains its power and cutting speed even in hard and dense wood, where a 20V saw would start to struggle.
Pros
- 18'' bar — for large trees
- 9AH battery included — runtime for long sessions
- FlexVolt 60V — consistent power in hard wood
- On sale at $588 (reg. $619)
Points to consider
- 18'' bar is heavier to handle for high pruning
- For even more intensive use, see the 20'' with 15AH battery
Ideal for: Felling large trees, large quantities of firewood, semi-professional forestry contractors.
Not ideal for: High pruning where a shorter bar is more maneuverable.

The ultimate in cordless from DeWalt. The 15AH battery on the 60V FlexVolt platform transforms this saw into a true alternative to gas-powered models for serious forestry work.
The 20-inch bar combined with the 15AH battery puts this saw in a class of its own. The cutting capacity covers trees up to 18 inches in diameter, which includes the vast majority of mature tree species in Quebec. The 15AH battery's runtime is sufficient for extended cutting sessions comparable to a gas-powered saw with a full tank. For forestry contractors who want to eliminate thermal engine maintenance while maintaining maximum cutting capacity, this is the answer.
Pros
- 20'' bar — maximum cutting capacity of the selection
- 15AH battery — runtime comparable to a full tank of gas
- FlexVolt 60V — maximum cordless power from DeWalt
- 20V backward compatible battery — works with all DeWalt tools
- On sale at $678 (reg. $709)
Points to consider
- Imposing size — not the tool for light pruning or confined spaces
- For very intensive, full-day forestry use, gas remains an option to consider
Ideal for: Forestry contractors, felling large mature trees, large quantities of firewood, intensive professional use.
Not ideal for: Light residential yard maintenance — the DCCS621P1 or DCCS623B are more suitable.
Price: $678

Bar length: the main criterion
The basic rule: choose a bar slightly longer than the diameter of the trees you cut most often. For pruning and branches up to 6 inches: 8-inch bar. For routine property maintenance with trees up to 10 inches: 12-inch bar. For regular felling up to 14 inches: 16-inch bar. For large trees and intensive use: 18 to 20-inch bar.
Battery platform
Same logic as for all cordless tools: if you have DeWalt 20V or FlexVolt batteries, choose DeWalt. If you have Makita LXT 18V batteries, choose Makita. Changing platforms is expensive. For maximum power, the FlexVolt 60V (DeWalt) and XGT 40V (Makita) platforms are significantly superior to standard 20V/18V.
Cordless vs. gas-powered: what's the real situation?
FlexVolt 60V and XGT 40V cordless chainsaws have closed most of the gap with gas-powered models for residential and semi-professional use. Cordless wins on instant start, minimal maintenance, and zero emissions. Gas-powered maintains an advantage for very long sessions in isolated forests without access to recharging, or for full-day professional felling of very large trees.
Chain oil: don't neglect it
Any chainsaw, cordless or gas-powered, consumes chain oil to lubricate the bar and chain. Check the level before each use and refill the reservoir regularly. A poorly lubricated chain wears quickly and can break, which is dangerous. Always have a bottle of chain oil within reach when you work.
Safety tip: Always wear leg protection (chainsaw chaps), a helmet with a visor, and cut-resistant gloves when using a chainsaw. It doesn't matter if it's just to cut a single branch. Chainsaw accidents happen quickly and are serious.

For routine property maintenance, the DeWalt DCCS621P1 12'' 20V kit ($328) is the best starting point. For larger jobs, the DeWalt DCCS670X1 16'' FlexVolt ($528) is the benchmark. For maximum power, the DeWalt DCCS677Z1 20'' 60V 15AH ($678) is unbeatable. All available at Équipement Polar.
The bar should be slightly longer than the diameter of the trees you cut most often. For light pruning: 8-inch bar. For routine property maintenance: 12-inch bar. For regular felling of common-sized trees: 16-inch bar. For large trees and intensive use: 18 to 20-inch bar. When in doubt, 12'' is the best starting point for residential use.
Modern 60V and XGT 40V cordless chainsaws achieve performance comparable to light gas-powered models for most residential and semi-professional uses. Cordless offers instant start, zero engine maintenance, and no emissions. Gas-powered maintains an advantage for very long sessions in isolated forests without the possibility of recharging.
After each use: clean chips from the sprocket cover, check chain tension and chain oil level. Regularly: sharpen the chain with the correct size file (5/32'', 3/16'', or 7/32'' depending on chain pitch), inspect the bar for wear. At the end of the season: deep clean, lubricate the bar, store batteries at 50% charge in a temperate place. Polar offers a range of files and chainsaw accessories.
