How to choose a stepladder or a ladder for the job site and the shop

Stepladder or ladder: which should you choose for the job?

A stepladder is self-supporting: you unfold it and work, without leaning it against a wall. It suits indoor work, the shop and jobs at ceiling height. An extension ladder leans against a structure and is used to reach a roof or an upper floor.

On price, a 6-foot Metaltech stepladder costs $197.80 and the 6-foot Featherlite model $251.75. A 24-foot Metaltech extension ladder is $469 and the 36-foot one $779.

Why choose fiberglass?

Fiberglass does not conduct electricity as long as it is clean and dry, which makes it a good choice for electricians and work near electrical installations. It also resists corrosion and weather.

Our Metaltech and Featherlite stepladders and ladders are fiberglass. Several Class 1 models are rated for 300 lb, which covers a person and their tools. Fiberglass does not rust and is easy to clean with water and a cloth.

What height and size of stepladder should you plan for?

A stepladder is identified by its length. The height you can work at is a few feet higher, but never stand on the top step or the tool tray. Choose a model a little taller than your work point.

The 4-foot Metaltech is $158.56, the 8-foot is $240.99 and the 12-foot is $390.46. For a 2-foot stepladder, the Metaltech model is $97.32.

When should you choose a platform ladder and which accessories should you add?

A platform ladder offers a wider, more stable work surface, useful for long jobs like painting or installing light fixtures. The 300 lb Featherlite models are $350.64 (3 feet), $389.95 (4 feet) and $472.20 (6 feet).

Add a DeWalt ladder hook at $23.08 to hang a tool. Some sizes are sometimes out of stock, so check stock on the product page. Keep the steps clean and dry to preserve boot grip.

How do you use a stepladder or a ladder safely?

Keep three points of contact, meaning two feet and one hand or two hands and one foot, when you climb up and down. Set the stepladder on flat, stable ground, with the spreaders fully locked before you climb.

Do not exceed the stated capacity, counting your weight, your tools and your materials. For an extension ladder, lean it on a solid surface and inspect the rungs, the non-slip feet and the locks before each use.

We answer your questions about stepladders and ladders

Which size of stepladder should you choose?

Choose a stepladder a little taller than your work point, because the stated length is less than the reachable height. Our stepladders range from 2 feet ($97.32) to 12 feet ($390.46). Also see our safety helmets for working at height.

Why choose a fiberglass ladder?

Fiberglass does not conduct electricity as long as it is clean and dry, and it resists corrosion. It is the material of our Metaltech and Featherlite stepladders. Complete your gear with our clothing and safety collection.

What load capacity do your stepladders have?

Several Class 1 Metaltech models and the Featherlite platform ladders are rated for 300 lb. Add the weight of your tools to your own weight and check the capacity on the product page before ordering.

What is the difference between a stepladder and a platform ladder?

A stepladder has steps, while a platform ladder ends in a wider, more stable work platform. It suits long jobs. The 3 to 6-foot models sell from $350.64 to $472.20.

Do you ship ladders across Canada?

Yes. Shipping is free on orders of $150 or more, which includes most of our stepladders and ladders. Some sizes are in limited quantity, so check stock or contact our team.
