Description

What the Product Contains

This ZEP 45 penetrating lubricant is a 14 oz aerosol with PTFE.

Product Overview

ZEP 45 penetrating lubricant is a high-performance industrial lubricant designed to quickly loosen seized, rusted, or corroded metal parts. Its advanced formula contains PTFE, which significantly reduces friction and extends the life of your equipment while providing exceptional corrosion protection.

Unlike standard penetrating oils that stop working after a few seconds, ZEP 45 continues to work for 10 minutes or more, penetrating deep into the tightest spaces to loosen even the most stubborn rust. This extended penetration saves you valuable time by reducing the effort required to loosen stuck bolts, nuts, screws, and other components.

This multi-purpose lubricant effectively displaces moisture, creating a protective barrier that prevents future rust and corrosion. Its exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures, from -45°C to +245°C, makes it the ideal choice for Quebec's climate and demanding industrial environments.

Included in your order:

1x ZEP 45 Penetrating Lubricant Aerosol with PTFE - 14 oz

Professional formula with polytetrafluoroethylene offering continuous penetration for 10 minutes or more. Integrated precision nozzle allows for targeted application in tight spaces without the need for an additional tube. Robust can construction ensures consistent pressure until the last use.

Advantages of ZEP 45 Penetrating Lubricant

Superior Performance Compared to Standard Products

Unlike conventional penetrating oils that stop working after a few seconds, ZEP 45 continues to penetrate for at least 10 minutes. This prolonged penetration frees even the most stubborn parts without excessive effort or risky heating.

Long-Term Economics

The PTFE formula creates a durable protective film that reduces the frequency of application. A single preventative treatment protects your equipment for weeks, decreasing maintenance costs and unexpected downtime.

Exceptional Versatility

One single product replaces several solutions: penetrating oil, lubricant, corrosion inhibitor, and moisture remover. Keep just one can in your workshop instead of an arsenal of specialized products.

Adapted to the Quebec Climate

Effective from -45°C to +245°C, the ZEP 45 works perfectly in the rigorous winter conditions of Quebec as well as in high-temperature industrial environments.

Care and Usage

First Use

Activating your new ZEP 45 Penetrating Lubricant:

1. Aerosol preparation

Shake the can vigorously for 10-15 seconds before each use. This step ensures even distribution of the PTFE and active ingredients in the formula.

2. Spray test

Perform a test on a test area or cloth to check that the nozzle is functioning correctly and that the pressure is adequate. Hold the can upright, 15-20 cm from the target surface.

3. Pre-cleaning of surfaces

For best results, remove excess dirt, mud, or debris with a wire brush or cloth. The product penetrates better on surfaces free of coarse contaminants. For heavily soiled parts, first use an industrial degreaser.

4. First application

Spray generously onto the area to be treated. For seized parts, leave for a minimum of 5-10 minutes to allow for complete penetration. Tap lightly with a rubber mallet to facilitate product infiltration.

Regular Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your ZEP 45 Penetrating Lubricant:

After each use:

  • Briefly turn the can upside down and spray for 1-2 seconds to clean the nozzle and prevent clogging.
  • Wipe the nozzle with a clean cloth if product buildup is visible.
  • Replace the protective cap to preserve the spray mechanism

Aerosol storage:

  • Store upright in a cool, dry place at a temperature between 5°C and 30°C
  • Keep away from direct heat sources, open flames, or spark-generating equipment.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure, which can increase internal pressure

Periodic verification:

  • Test the aerosol pressure monthly if used infrequently
  • Replace the can if the spray becomes uneven or weak despite shaking.
  • Note the opening date on the can to track the product's shelf life.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Deep monthly cleaning:

Spray nozzle:

Remove the nozzle and soak it for 15 minutes in a mild solvent if it is partially blocked. Rinse with warm water, dry completely, and reassemble. Never use sharp objects to unblock it, as this will damage the mechanism.

Internal dip tube:

If the flow rate becomes very low despite a full can, the tube may be partially blocked. Shake vigorously while holding the can at different angles and then test. If the problem persists, transferring to a new container is not recommended for safety reasons.

Treated surfaces:

Wipe off excess product from adjacent non-metallic surfaces such as sensitive plastics, fresh paint, or soft rubber. ZEP 45 is safe on most materials, but excess may leave a greasy film.

Precautions for Use

For your safety:

Ventilation required

Always use in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Hydrocarbon vapors can cause dizziness if inhaled in high concentrations in a confined space.

Eye and skin protection

Wear safety glasses when spraying upwards or in confined spaces to avoid eye contact. In case of prolonged skin contact, wash with soap and water.

Keep away from sources of ignition

Extremely flammable aerosol. Never use near flames, hot surfaces above 50°C, active welding equipment or areas where static electricity occurs.

Not recommended for some applications

Avoid use on brakes, clutches, or surfaces requiring maximum friction. Do not apply to clear polycarbonate or expanded polystyrene plastics, which can be damaged by solvents.

Handling of pressurized containers

Never puncture the bomb, even when empty. Do not throw into a fire. Internal pressure can cause an explosion if the bomb is overheated or damaged.

Storage Tips

Short-term storage (less than 6 months):

  • Ideal ambient temperature between 15°C and 25°C
  • Vertical position in toolbox or workshop cabinet
  • Away from windows exposed to direct sunlight
  • Cap securely in place to prevent partial evaporation

Long-term storage (more than 6 months):

  • Same conditions as short term but check bomb integrity every 2-3 months
  • Shake periodically to prevent separation of components
  • Test pressure before use after prolonged storage
  • If stored for more than 2 years, perform a complete test before critical use

Winter storage in Quebec:

  • Avoid unheated garages where temperatures regularly drop below -10°C.
  • Gel can affect viscosity and reduce spraying efficiency
  • If cold storage is unavoidable, warm the can to room temperature 2-3 hours before use.
  • Never heat directly with a heat source

Expected lifespan:3-4 years with proper storage. Beyond that, the effectiveness of PTFE and active agents may decrease even if the product is still spraying.

Our Answers to Your Questions about ZEP 45 Penetrating Lubricant

How is ZEP 45 different from standard WD-40?

ZEP 45 contains PTFE which reduces friction more effectively and provides long-lasting lubrication, unlike standard WD-40 which is mainly a light penetrant.

ZEP 45 continues penetrating for a minimum of 10 minutes compared to a few seconds for conventional products, allowing stuck parts to be released more easily without excessive effort.

ZEP 45 is specifically formulated for professional industrial use with enhanced corrosion protection, while standard WD-40 targets the general public for lighter applications.

Its temperature range of –45°C to +245°C surpasses most standard penetrants, making it ideal for harsh Quebec climates and extreme industrial environments.

How long should I let ZEP 45 work on a stuck part?

For slightly stuck parts or superficial rust:

  • 5 to 10 minutes is usually enough
  • Spray generously and tap lightly with a mallet
  • Try loosening after this time

For heavily oxidized parts or components stuck for a long time:

  • Let it work for 15 to 30 minutes for maximum penetration
  • Reapply after 10 minutes if the surface becomes dry
  • For extreme cases, treat in the evening and let it sit overnight
  • ZEP 45 continues working even after 1–2 hours

The product keeps seeping into microscopic gaps for a prolonged period, unlike ordinary penetrants which stop acting quickly.

Can I use ZEP 45 on electronic components?

Yes, ZEP 45 can displace moisture on connectors and electrical components, but with important precautions.

Usage recommendations on electronics:

  • Ensure circuits are powered off before application
  • Use the minimum amount needed with the precision nozzle
  • Ideal for removing moisture from housings, exposed connectors, switches
  • Allow to dry completely before powering on (at least 15–30 minutes)

Limitations to consider:

  • Not suitable for sensitive electronics or delicate printed circuit boards
  • PTFE lubricating film may attract dust on some components
  • For fine electronics, choose a specialized electrical contact cleaner
  • ZEP 45 is best for robust industrial connectors and outdoor equipment

Does ZEP 45 work in Quebec’s winter cold?

Absolutely, ZEP 45 is specifically designed to perform in Quebec’s harsh winter conditions.

Cold-weather performance:

  • Effective down to –45°C, a temperature rarely reached even in the coldest Quebec winters
  • Formula remains fluid and sprays properly at these extreme temperatures
  • Ideal for freeing frozen equipment, icy locks, outdoor mechanisms

Typical winter applications:

  • Vehicle doors and locks, trailers, frozen containers
  • Snow-removal equipment and heavy outdoor machinery
  • Hinges, latches, and mechanisms exposed to the elements

Practical tip: if the aerosol itself was stored in the cold, warm it up to room temperature for 1–2 hours before use for better spraying and penetration.

What is included with my purchase of ZEP 45?

Your purchase includes:

  • 1x ZEP 45 Penetrating Lubricant with PTFE, 14 oz (397 grams)
  • Integrated precision nozzle for targeted application
  • Protective cap for the spray mechanism

What is NOT included:

  • Extension tube (not needed because the precision nozzle is sufficient for most uses)
  • Protective gloves or safety equipment (sold separately)
  • Wipes or cleaning materials

The 14 oz format provides approximately 200–250 sprays depending on application time, enough for several months of use in an average workshop or dozens of freeing operations.

How should I store ZEP 45 to maximize its shelf life?

Optimal storage conditions:

  • Stable temperature between 15°C and 25°C in a workshop or heated shed
  • Stored upright in a toolbox, shelf, or cabinet
  • Away from windows exposed to direct sunlight and heat sources
  • Cap always properly closed after use

Absolutely avoid:

  • Unheated garages in winter where temperatures regularly drop below –10°C
  • Proximity to boilers, radiators, welding equipment, or flames
  • Sun exposure inside a vehicle or near glass doors
  • Long-term storage lying down or upside down

Expected shelf life with proper storage: 3 to 4 years while maintaining full effectiveness.

Freezing will not permanently damage the product, but may temporarily affect viscosity. If stored cold, bring it back to room temperature for 2–3 hours before use for optimal performance.

Does ZEP 45 actually protect against rust or does it only loosen parts?

ZEP 45 provides dual action: immediate loosening AND long-lasting corrosion protection, unlike simple penetrants.

Corrosion protection:

  • PTFE protective film creates a hydrophobic barrier that repels water and moisture
  • Prevents new rust from forming on treated metal parts
  • Protection lasts several weeks depending on exposure to elements
  • Ideal for preventive maintenance on new or freshly cleaned equipment

Penetrating action:

  • Penetrates and dissolves existing rust for 10+ minutes
  • Loosens parts stuck by corrosion or oxidation
  • Restores mobility to seized mechanisms

Recommended preventive application:

  • On new parts before exposure to the weather
  • After thoroughly cleaning rusty equipment
  • Regular treatment (every 2–3 months) on critical outdoor equipment
  • Before winter storage of seasonal machinery

For existing rust, combine with mechanical brushing and degreasing for optimal results before applying ZEP 45.
