Care and Usage

First Use

Activating your new Makita chainsaw:

1. Complete pre-start inspection

Carefully unpack the kit and check that all listed components are present. Visually inspect the chainsaw for any shipping damage. Check chain tension: the chain should be firmly installed on the guide bar but should slide freely by hand with slight resistance. If the chain feels loose, adjust it immediately using the tool-free side tensioning knob before each use.

2. Filling the chain oil reservoir

Locate the transparent oil reservoir cap on the right side of the chainsaw. Unscrew it and fill with the supplied biodegradable chain oil up to the visible "MAX" mark (200ml capacity). Do not overfill – excess oil could cause leaks. Close the cap tightly. Test the lubrication system: hold the chainsaw over a piece of cardboard and pull the trigger for a few seconds. A thin line of oil should appear on the cardboard, confirming active lubrication.

3. Installation and charging of batteries

Insert two BL1850B batteries into the DC18RD dual charger. A flashing red LED indicates charging. Wait for a solid green LED to signal a full charge (45 minutes). During the initial charge, read the instruction manual and familiarize yourself with the controls. Once charged, slide the batteries into the chainsaw compartments until an audible click confirms secure locking.

4. Functionality testing and adjustments

Put on safety glasses and gloves. Ensure the chain brake is disengaged (handguard retracted). Press the main power switch (the LED will illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off – this is normal). Gradually squeeze the variable speed trigger. The chain should rotate smoothly without any unusual noises. Release the trigger – the chain should stop immediately. Test the emergency chain brake by pushing the handguard forward – the chain should stop instantly. Congratulations, your chainsaw is ready to use!

Maintenance After Each Use

To maximize the lifespan of your Makita chainsaw:

After each cutting session:

  • Clean up accumulated debrisUse a soft brush or compressed air to remove sawdust, shavings, and debris accumulated around the guide bar, engine ventilation inlets, and housing. Debris can clog lubrication and cause the engine to overheat.
  • Inspect the oil reservoir levelCheck the remaining level through the transparent cap. Always fill before storage – an empty reservoir risks drying out the seals and hardening oil residue in the lines.
  • Turn the chain guide regularlyAlternate the top and bottom sides of the guide bar every 3-5 uses for even rail wear. With regular rotation, the guide bar will last twice as long.

Chain management:

  • Check cooled chain tensionThe chain, while warm after use, will relax as it cools. Check the tension once cooled – the links should touch the underside of the guide but slide freely by hand. Readjust if necessary with the side knob.
  • Check sharp edges visuallyRounded, shiny, or discolored teeth indicate dullness requiring sharpening. A dull chain unnecessarily strains the engine and increases the risk of dangerous kickback.

Battery rotation and inspection:

  • Alternate battery useUse your batteries in even rotation for uniform cell aging. Number them if necessary for tracking.
  • Wipe terminal contactsGently clean the 16 battery contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth. Clean contacts ensure optimal connection and prevent microscopic electrical arcs that prematurely wear out the terminals.

Monthly Cleaning and Maintenance

Deep cleaning monthly (or every 20 hours of use):

Chain guide and groove:Remove the chain completely, including the tensioning knob. Use a thin scraper or flathead screwdriver to remove compacted sawdust from the guide groove (where the chain runs). A blocked groove prevents lubrication from reaching the chain. Clean the tiny lubrication holes at the guide ends with a thin wire or toothpick. Inspect the guide rails for wear with a specialized gauge—rails worn beyond specifications require guide replacement.

Chain drive sprocket:Locate the sprocket driving the chain at the guide bar. Brush away any accumulated debris between the teeth with a wire brush. Inspect for tooth wear – asymmetrical or pointed teeth (instead of uniformly rounded) indicate that sprocket replacement is required to prevent premature wear on a new chain.

Engine air intakes and ventilation:Blow compressed air (maximum 30 PSI) through all case ventilation grilles to dislodge internal dust. A clean motor dissipates heat efficiently and extends the life of electronic components.

Lubrication system:Empty the old oil reservoir completely. Rinse the inside with clean oil and discard. Refill with fresh oil. Old oil in a partially empty reservoir oxidizes and thickens, clogging passages.

Precautions for Use

For your safety and optimal performance:

❌ Never overload the chainsaw- Respect the maximum cutting capacity of 15 inches in diameter. Forcing the wood into excessive diameter will overheat the motor, drain the batteries quickly, and risk dangerous jamming of the guide bar.

❌ Avoid contact between the chain guide and the ground/rocks- The slightest contact with dirt, gravel, or rocks instantly dulls the chain and damages the guide bar. Keep the guide bar elevated and use the metal claw stop as a pivot point.

❌ Never use with a dull chain- A dull chain requires excessive pressure, overloads the brushless motor, increases vibrations and multiplies the risk of violent kickback by 4. Sharpen or replace as soon as a decrease in cutting speed is noticed.

❌ Absolutely no cutting above the shouldersExcessive height eliminates precise control and dramatically increases the risk of knocking back towards the face. Use a ladder/platform for working at height or a pole pruner.

❌ Never bypass the safety chain brake- The chain brake is a safety device in case of kickback. Keep it functional and test it before each use. A faulty brake requires immediate repair before any cutting.

Makita Storage Tips

Short-term storage (less than 2 weeks between uses):

  • Storage location:Hang your chainsaw in a temperature-controlled garage/shed on a sturdy wall hook, with the guide bar pointing downwards. Prolonged horizontal storage may cause residual oil to leak.
  • Battery status:Leave chainsaw batteries installed if use is planned within 2 weeks. Remove them if storage exceeds this period.
  • Oil level:Keep the tank at least half full to prevent internal seals and conduits from drying out.

Long-term storage (more than 2 weeks):

  • Battery preparation:Remove the batteries and charge them to 40-50% capacity (2 out of 4 LEDs lit). Store them separately at room temperature 15-25°C. Partial charging preserves lithium-ion chemistry during extended storage – neither completely empty nor fully charged.
  • Oil tank draining:Drain the oil reservoir completely if storage exceeds one month. Stagnant oil oxidizes, thickens, and clogs microscopic lubrication channels. Refill with fresh oil before reuse.
  • Chain guide protection:Install the protective guide cover provided. Apply a thin coat of anti-rust oil to the chain if it will be stored for more than 3 months in a humid environment.

Winter storage in Quebec (temperature below 0°C):

  • Batteries required:NEVER STORE batteries in a frozen environment. Always store them indoors at a heated temperature of 15-20°C. Sub-zero temperatures irreversibly damage lithium-ion cells and permanently reduce their capacity by 30-50%.
  • The chainsaw itself:Excellent cold tolerance down to -20°C storage if completely emptied of liquids. No residual oil in the tank (freezing possible below -15°C).
  • Spring recommissioning:Allow the chainsaw to acclimate to room temperature for 2-3 hours before inserting the batteries. Internal condensation resulting in thermal shock may cause electronic short circuits.

Our answers to your questions about the MAKITA chainsaw set

How long do the 5.0Ah batteries last on this chainsaw?

With two Makita 18V 5.0Ah batteries installed simultaneously, you get up to 90 full cuts in 6-inch (150mm) treated pine before full discharge. In varied real-world conditions, expect 45–60 minutes of continuous heavy-duty cutting or 90–120 minutes of light, intermittent pruning.

Factors affecting runtime: wood hardness (hardwood reduces by 30%), cut diameter (12"+ logs consume double), ambient temperature (cold at -10°C reduces by 20%), and chain condition (dull chain increases consumption by 40%). The dual-battery intelligent system automatically alternates discharge for optimal balancing.

What is the difference between this Makita 18V chainsaw and the XGT 40V model?

The LXT 18V series (this DUC400 model) uses a dual-battery 18V system (36V combined), ideal for residential owners and versatile professionals already invested in the Makita 18V ecosystem (325+ compatible tools). Performance is equivalent to a 30cc gas saw, lightweight at 11.8 lbs, excellent for varied tasks up to 15 inches in diameter.

The XGT 40V series (DUC406/DUC410 models) offers higher raw power equivalent to a 35–40cc gas saw for demanding arborist-level work involving repeated cutting of large logs all day. Slightly heavier at 13–14 lbs, 30–40% more expensive, but with extended runtime and maximum cutting speed. Recommendation: 18V LXT for versatility and compatibility, XGT 40V for primary heavy forestry use.

Is this compatible with my other Makita 18V batteries?

Absolutely! This chainsaw accepts all Makita 18V LXT batteries, old and new: 1.5Ah, 2.0Ah, 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah. It requires two batteries simultaneously to operate (36V configuration). You may mix capacities (e.g., 5.0Ah + 3.0Ah), but optimal performance comes from a matching pair for balanced discharge.

Expect about 30–40 cuts with two 3.0Ah batteries, 50–70 with two 4.0Ah, and 90 with two included 5.0Ah units. Conversely, the included 5.0Ah batteries also power your 325+ other Makita 18V tools: drills, saws, grinders, blowers, etc. A unified ecosystem that saves hundreds of dollars from redundant batteries.

What exactly is included in this $859 kit?

This complete MAK-DUC400PT2 kit includes everything needed to start immediately:

(1) Makita DUC400Z cordless chainsaw with 16" Oregon bar and pre-installed chain,

(2) Two BL1850B-L 18V 5.0Ah lithium-ion batteries with LED indicators,

Additionally, Makita’s manufacturer warranty of 3 years covers material/manufacturing defects via authorized service centers in Canada. Batteries are covered for 3 years, charger for 1 year. Polar Industrial Equipment provides free technical support for the life of the product. Your investment is fully protected.

How do you maintain this cordless electric chainsaw?

Minimal maintenance compared to gas! After each use: clean sawdust and debris with a brush, check the oil reservoir level, and check chain tension once cooled.

Monthly: clean the bar groove thoroughly, clear motor ventilation dust with compressed air, inspect sprocket tooth wear. Chain sharpening: every 5–10 cutting hours or as soon as speed decreases.

No maintenance required for the brushless motor (zero brushes to replace), no spark plug, no air filter, no carburetor to adjust. Batteries self-manage internal chemistry—simply store them at 40–50% charge if unused for long periods. Refer to the detailed Maintenance section above for full procedures. Lifespan 10–15 years with proper care.

Is this cordless chainsaw powerful enough to cut hardwood and firewood?

Definitely! The outer-rotor brushless motor delivers power equivalent to a 30cc gas saw with higher torque. Efficiently cuts maple, oak, ash, birch, cherry—typical Quebec hardwoods. Chain speed of 3,940 ft/min slices through 12-inch hardwood in 15–20 seconds without forcing. Two 5.0Ah batteries provide enough runtime to process 1/3 cord of firewood in a session.

Advantages vs gas: instant start, no stubborn pull-cord, constant torque with no RPM drop, superior maneuverability due to lighter weight, zero toxic fumes in a garage/shed. Limitation: massive 18"+ trunks require multiple passes or a high-displacement gas saw. For 90% of residential firewood needs, performance is more than sufficient.

Can this chainsaw be used in winter in Quebec cold temperatures?

Yes, with cold-weather precautions! The chainsaw itself works down to -10°C without issues—brushless motor and electronics tolerate cold, and XPT technology protects against moisture from melting snow. The critical point: lithium-ion batteries. Performance gradually drops below 0°C: at -5°C expect 70% of normal runtime; at -10°C about 50–60%.

Best winter practices:

  1. Store batteries indoors the night before,
  2. Insert pre-warmed batteries right before use,
  3. Keep spare batteries in coat pockets near your body,
  4. Sharpen the chain frequently—frozen wood dulls it twice as fast.

Standard bar oil thickens below -10°C: use synthetic winter chain oil. Excellent option for clearing storm-damaged branches in winter without fumes inside your garage!

What bar length should I choose for versatile residential use?

This model includes a 16-inch (400mm) bar—optimal for residential versatility! Effective cutting up to 14–15 inches in diameter (real cutting capacity slightly below bar length).

Advantages of 16": maneuverable for pruning overhead, long enough for typical 10–12" firewood logs, perfect balance of weight/power for users of all sizes including women.

A 12–14" bar would be insufficient for standard firewood.

An 18–20" bar adds unnecessary weight for residential needs and increases battery consumption. Makita specifically optimizes the motor/battery for a 16" bar on this model. For typical wooded Quebec properties, it is the ideal length for 85% of common tasks.
